Lesson

The Sunday School lesson for September 20 is "First and Last in the Vineyard", based on Matthew 20:1-16. The class will read the Parable of the Vineyard Workers hearing how vineyard workers arrived at different times throughout the day to pick grapes for the landowner, but were paid the same at the end of the day. The class will explore how Jesus uses this parable to teach how about God's notion of fairness, grace, and generosity, which is often very different than society's notions. God welcomes everyone to the vineyard to help, to serve, to do God's work. No matter how early or late we arrive, we can believe that we will each receive God's generosity. The Parable of the Vineyard Workers reminds the church of Christ's generosity and encourages the whole community to extend generosity even when we think others don't deserve it.

Activities

Sweep the Creek--September 26 at 9 a.m. meeting at the parking lot on Sligo Creek Pkwy (between Brunett Ave & Dallas Ave). The group will walk up and down the Sligo Creek path and fields nearby picking up trash and cleaning up God's creation. Feel free to stay as long as works with your family's schedule. Long pants and long-sleeve shirts are encouraged.

God's Work. Our Hands.--October 18 at 10 a.m. in the Great Hall. The Sunday School children and congregation will make no-sew blankets for children in the community. Project Linus will lead us in the event and will distribute the blankets to many organizations, including A Wider Circle, MCPS, local shelters, Greater D.C. Diaper Bank, and more. This is a great event for all age groups!

Pumpkin Painting and Carving--October 24 at 10 a.m. meeting in the blue and white tent on the lawn behind the church. Bring your own pumpkin, but all other supplies will be provided and refreshments will be served.

Reformation Sunday--October 25 worship at 10 a.m. followed by a meal in the Great Hall.

Trunk of Treat--October 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Dale Dr. and Colesville Rd. This event is sponsored by the Saint Luke Christian Day School (CDS), but everyone is welcome.

Logistics

Sunday School classes are held from September 20 to May 23 at 10 a.m. meeting in rooms 101-102. Click here or the registration button at the top of the page to register your child for Sunday School. Though your child is welcome to attend if you do not register, registering provides important information about your child and provides the needed contact information so you can be kept informed about what is going on with the Children's Ministry at Saint Luke along with allergy, medical, and any other important info about your child. While the Sunday School children meet, middle schoolers and high school youth also have classes and there is an adult education class called Up for Discussion. There are also periodic adult classes led by Pastor Miller or others.

In addition to weekly Sunday School for PreK-5th graders, monthly events are also offered for toddlers through 5th graders and their families. These events include social and service events such things as pumpkin painting and/or carving, setting out food for the Food Pantry's annual Thanksgiving basket event for those in need in the community, decorating Christmas cookies, creating Valentine's for those in need of an extra dose of God's love from the community, an Easter egg hunt, and more. In addition, PreK-5th graders are also invited to attend Vacation Bible School, which is a camp held one week at the end of June/early July from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Middle and high school youth are invited to be teen volunteers helping to lead the younger kids in science, service projects, recreation/games, story time, music, crafts, and more.
